Renowned Charleston artist, Carolyn Epperly, will present a program at the Marion County Museum on Wednesday, April 28th at 5:30 pm.  The program is offered in conjunction with  the Museum's exhibit from the South Carolina State Museum's Watermedia Society's Exhibit, which has been on display at the Marion County Museum during the month of April.  Mrs. Epperly will do a step by step painting, explaining it all from the idea to near completion.  Also she will introduce the South Carolina Watermedia Society  paintings, and explain the Judge's critique of the paintings currently at the Museum.
Mrs. Epperly first taught on Prince Island, Canada for two years.  She visited Charleston, and fell in love with its beauty.  She later moved to Charleston, taught Latin at a private school, and took a watercolor class from Virginia Fouche Bolton.  Watercolor became her passion.  She married a native Charlestonian, and when her daughters were born the painting became her second career.  She has studied watercolor and oil painting under many nationally known artists, such as Glenn Bradshaw, Jeanne Dobie, and Ralph Smith.
She has won numerous awards, such as AWS Annual International Art Show, Watercolor USA - Juror's Awards and Museum Purchase, Piccolo Spoleto Outdoor Art Show - Merit Awards, First Place, and Piccolo Spoleto Juried Art Exhibition, First Place, to name just a few.  Also she has had publications in the US and Canada, one being "Watercolor Magic", Feature Article, Winter 2000, and some being distributed internationally.
She is the Vice President of the South Carolina Watermedia 2010: Member of Excellence, the Watercolor USA Honor Society, Transparent Watercolor Society of America and the Charleston Art Guild, Exhibiting Member.
Mrs. Epperly grew up spending numerous holidays and summer vacations here in Marion, where she visited the W. B. Norton family.  Carolyn's Mother, Elizabeth Rollins Epperly was married to the Norton's son, John H. Norton, who was killed in action at the close of WWII.  However, she maintained a close relationship with the family.  She recently visited Marion with her sister, Elizabeth, retracing steps she had taken many times as a child, from Withlacoochee Avenue to Evans Road and through downtown Marion.

Chili Cook Off

On Saturday, February 27th, The Arts Council supported the 1st Annual Swamp Fox Chili Cook Off & Benefit.  The benefit was hosted by Tio’s, and the proceeds from ticket sales and booth fees were donated to the Marion Fire Department.  The Arts Council shared a booth with Mary Beth Durham (Aunt Bethie’s Cakes) and sold homemade baked goods and water.  We saw many Arts Council members out to support the community and join in the fun.

Poetry

On Friday, February 12, The Arts Council and the Marion County Museum hosted a poetry reading at the museum.  Despite record snowfall, several devoted poetry fans attended and shared their favorite poems. Special thanks to Roseanne Black of the Museum for organizing and hosting this event.

On Tuesday evening, August 25th, The Arts Council of Marion County held its annual meeting at the Marion Opera House.  The meeting, open to all members of the Arts Council, was called to order by outgoing president Jane Wegner.  Mrs. Wegner presented the highlights of the 2008-09 year.  These events included a play by the Carolina Actors' Spotlight Theatre (CAST), a music scholarship for a local student, a Membership Appreciation Holiday Party, An Evening of Music, and more.  Mrs. Wegner also made copies of the financial report available to those present.
Amy Mendes, the new Arts Council President, then introduced herself and the other new officers.  They are Yvonne Edwards, Vice President; Pat Stedman, Treasurer, and John Whitman, Secretary.  Mrs. Mendes discussed plans for the upcoming year, including another Evening of Music, and a Heritage Festival, to be organized in conjunction with a local group dedicated to that project.  Mrs. Mendes also announced that guidelines to apply to the Arts Council for funding projects will be formalized and added to the web site in the upcoming months.  This will enable the Board to evaluate proposals quickly and dispense awards appropriately.
